“Hey, let’s go clubbing this Saturday!”
“Uhhhhm, I don’t really know about that, I’m not much of a club person.”
“Oh come on, everyone’s going, you’re going to miss out!”
Okay, I know what you’re thinking.
In reality, you really do want to hit the clubs, you don’t want to miss out on the fun.
But there’s a problem.
Uh oh.
You.
Don’t.
Know.
How.
To.
Dance!
*GASP*
“What if I make a fool out of myself on the dance floor?”
“What if everyone start laughing at me?”
“Oh man, that’s going to be so humiliating!”
Look, I know exactly how you feel. But don’t worry, in this guide I will show you how you can get started with dance quickly.
This way, you can be sure that you don’t miss out on the fun. Also: you’ll be sure not to embarrass yourself in front of all your friends.
Now what’s the real issue here?
You’ve never really cared to learn how to dance up until recently because, well, you never really needed to.
But now all of a sudden, dancing is a cool.
Everyone is doing it, and it’s almost a secret problem when a guy doesn’t know how to dance.
On the other end of the spectrum, some of guys think that we are AWESOME at dancing, and we go too far out. WAY, too far out.
Kind of like this guy -
These are the guys that embarrass the crap out of themselves – without even realizing it.
These are the worst. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.
Don’t be this guy.
Another big no-no is the awkward dancer.
Kind of like this dude:
I shudder every time I see a guy go off like this in the club.
What do we do though?
Us awkward, self-conscious, don’t-know-how-to-dance kinda guys.
Nothing right?
When we’re at a club, or social function, we get all nervous and tensed up.
We just stand in the corner – paralyzed!
Not good!
So how do we break lose of these invisible shackles and get down on the dance floor?
How do we actually start letting lose and start having some fun?
Well first, we got to understand our music.
If you’re reading this, then you’re probably going to be attending a club that plays
- R&B / Slow jams
- EDM / House music
or lastly,
- Hip Hop
Now you would essentially dance differently to each one of these music genres, however, there’s a catch-all move that you would want to get started with before getting in to the dance steps with all these different genres of music
What move?
The basic nodding groove.
It looks like this
Seems simple at first I know, but stick with me here.
Now again, each one of these genre has a different pace or different speed of the beat, so you would bop to each genre differently.
Give it a try.
Here are a few songs that you should be able to catch on easily.
Starting with this:
Hip-hop. You want to listen to the “chicka chicka BAP, chicka chicka BAP, chicka chicka BAP” and nod your head to the “BAP”
How did you do? If you felt like you were off at times, play the song through a few more times and follow-through with the movement.
A few more times should do it.
Next, we got the popular EDM, or house music as they are traditionally called.
These songs are much faster – usually 120 beats per minute or higher. You gotta speed it up now.
Here’s a song that you can get started with. I will say it’s definitely harder than hip hop since it’s faster!
So brace yourself.
You’re listening in this case to the Boom, BAP, boom, BAP, boom, BAP. You nod to both the boom and BAP.
How was that?
Again, might want to give it a few plays before you feel in-sync with the beats.
Now for slow jams, you will want to slow it back down.
I saved slow jams (or oldies in this case) for practicing last because it’s actually the hardest to dance to. Since it’s much slower, you’ll have to pace yourself and catch each beat. Plus, if you haven’t gotten a hang of the movements, it will really show when you’re trying to dance to slow jams.
Okay. Give it a try to this:
Remember, you want to take your time. Pace yourself. Don’t rush it.
(start from 0.35)
Alright, once you’ve gotten a hang of the nodding movement, we can move on to some other movements!
Now I have taught this move in a few other tutorials but I don’t think any beginner dance tutorial will be complete if I left it out.
This dance move is the step-touch!
At first look, it seems like a very easy move.
However, to do it properly and to make it look good, it takes some techniques. I think you’ll see what I mean.
Take a look here:
Alright, now let’s practice it to a some simple beats.
First, try this hip-hop beat
Speeding it up a little
We won’t move on to EDM though, because it’ll be a little too quick for you to follow right now.
So,
How was it? Let’s put in a quick variation here.
This is the sliding step-touch. It’s a little different so watch carefully.
Not bad right?
Hopefully you’re starting to pick up the rhythm and you’re starting to “feel” more and more in sync with the music.
I don’t have to tell you that it gets easier with practice, but by through this guide a few times, you can be sure you’ll be off on the right track
